Fremantle Dockers are facing a setback in their draft plans after free agency compensation has seen their draft picks take a hit.

With the AFL dishing out free agency compensation picks for departing players, Fremantle’s overall draft position has been negatively impacted, shifting their selections further down the order.

The Dockers were hoping to use their strong draft hand to bolster their young list following a challenging season. However, the latest round of compensation picks for free agency losses, particularly from rival clubs, has bumped their position.

Fremantle had several key players depart during the trade period, but the club was not eligible for any free agency compensation due to the nature of those departures.

Other clubs, like North Melbourne and Essendon, who lost significant free agents, received compensation picks from the AFL, thus pushing Fremantle’s selections further back. North Melbourne, in particular, benefited from the departure of Ben McKay to Essendon, receiving an early first-round compensation pick, which had a ripple effect across the draft order.

Fremantle’s first selection in the upcoming draft is now expected to slide several spots from its original position. This complicates the Dockers’ draft strategy, as the talent pool available in the higher picks will be slightly diminished by the time their turn comes around.

While the club has been able to target some key areas through trades and other acquisitions, the setback in their draft hand could limit their ability to secure top-tier young talent.

Dockers’ list manager, David Walls, expressed some frustration with the outcome, acknowledging that the club would need to be more strategic with their remaining picks. “We’re obviously disappointed to see our picks pushed back, but we’re confident in our recruitment team and the work we’ve done on potential draftees. It just means we need to make every selection count even more,” Walls said.

Despite the disappointment, Fremantle remains optimistic about the future, with a number of emerging young stars already making their mark on the AFL.

However, this draft blow emphasizes the challenges the Dockers face as they continue to rebuild their list and climb back into contention for finals football.
