Man to stand trial for attempted murder over Gillingham soldier stabbing

Anthony Esan arrives at Medway Magistrates' Court in Chatham, Kent, where he is charged with the attempted murder

The case of a man charged with attempted murder after stabbing an army officer has been postponed. At a plea and trial preparation hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on August 22, Judge Philip St John-Stevens decided to delay the arraignment of Anthony Esan.

Esan’s trial is scheduled to begin on January 20, 2025, and is expected to last three weeks, presided over by a High Court judge.

The 24-year-old Esan, from Mooring Road, Rochester, faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He was arrested following a stabbing incident in Sally Port Gardens, Gillingham, on July 23.

The attack occurred around 5:55 pm, and Esan was apprehended about 25 minutes later. The next hearing is set for September 23. Both prosecutor Alison Morgan KC and defense counsel Tom Stern attended today’s proceedings.

Following the attack, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton was hospitalized in a “serious but stable condition” but has since been discharged, the court was informed.

The stabbing was condemned by Head of the Army General Sir Roly Walker as “horrific and unprovoked,” and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his “shock and appall.”
