The high-flying Hawks have ‘no ceiling,’ while the Roos lost their ‘fizz’ in the final rounds.

HAWTHORN is optimistic that their climb into the top eight will set them up for their first finals appearance in six years. The Hawks clinched their spot in the finals with a dominant 124-point victory over North Melbourne on Saturday in Launceston. They’ve now won five of their last six games, marking their first top eight finish since 2018, following a challenging 0-5 start to the season.

Hawks coach Sam Mitchell acknowledged, “We’ve known for six weeks that we could afford to lose one game, and we did lose that one game. To advance further, we’ll need to maintain consistency over the next four games. Winning finals is difficult, but we’ve given ourselves a chance.”

Mitchell expressed encouragement from the team’s early-season performances, even though the results weren’t always reflected on the scoreboard. “We aimed to build a team and a game style that would hold up in finals footy,” he said.

With the team now entering the finals, Mitchell remains confident in their preparation and potential. “The real challenge is discovering our ceiling. I’ve never set one,” he added.
