“Real bargain,” remarked Darren Huckerby on the free agent following his £3.5 million transfer from Coventry City to Norwich.

Darren Huckerby emphasizes that any club acquiring former Coventry City defender Sam McCallum this summer will secure a “real bargain” following his release by Norwich.

The 23-year-old full-back was initially transferred to the Canaries in the January 2020 window for a potential £3.5 million, promptly loaned back for the season. McCallum, discovered by City from non-league, returned on a season-long loan for 2020/21, making 41 Championship appearances and scoring once.

Upon his return to Carrow Road, McCallum was loaned out again for further development, spending a season at QPR, albeit hampered by a hamstring injury requiring surgery, limiting his appearances to 19 games.

He then featured 25 times for Norwich in 2022/23 and 34 times last season, including substitute appearances in the play-off semi-finals against Leeds United, largely serving as second choice to Dimitris Giannoulis.

Former Coventry favorite Huckerby, a Carrow Road regular where he concluded his English career, offered insight into McCallum’s progress and departure from Norwich. Huckerby noted, “I thought he did pretty well towards the end of his time at Norwich. When he first arrived, he was just a young lad, then in and out during their Premier League stint. Despite Giannoulis ahead of him, when he played, he held his own. His release is more about regular first-team football than lack of desire for him.”

He added, “With the manager change and McCallum’s wages, Norwich might be trimming down. He’s clearly talented, and towards the end of his spell, he showed his potential. Perhaps he’s better suited as a wing-back due to his attacking prowess. Many clubs will be eyeing him as a valuable free transfer.
