Gregg Broughton, director of football at Blackburn, reports that the Blues showed “significant interest” in striker Sam Gallagher during the January transfer window.
Rovers, who Town will play at Ewood Park on Good Friday, had made proposals worth up to £1.5 million, although Town ultimately decided not to sell after initially seeming open to a deal. This was reported by TWTD at the time.
The highest-paid player at Blackburn, Gallagher, 28, was reportedly eager to make the move. This summer is his Ewood Park contract’s expiration, although a new agreement is being discussed.
On deadline day, the Wales international Kieffer Moore, a former striker for the Blues, was eventually let go on loan from AFC Bournemouth. In nine starts and one substitute appearance, Moore has scored six goals.
“January saw a lot of interest in Sam Gallagher, including from Ipswich Town,” Broughton said to the Lancashire Telegraph.
“That is not surprising; their primary center forward, George Hirst, was hurt, and based on the same analytics we employed to discover George for us in the previous summer, we determined that Sam Gallagher was the best available replacement for them to sign.
“I made a very clear proposal to the board. It would have been quite expensive in January to sign a replacement for Sam, and I did not think we could afford it.
“The summer is a much better time to pursue creative business. In order to determine Sam’s destiny, we must make a decision alongside him, not on his behalf.
“We are in open communication about what that could be with the athlete and his representation. An offer to sign a brand-new contract is on the table.
