Ipswich Town move to sign “fantastic” £200k-p/w his club don’t want him

Ipswich Town are one of two clubs considering a move to sign an out-of-favour international ace in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Ipswich heavy spending yet to pay off

Off the back of consecutive promotions from League One to the Premier League, Ipswich were one of the busiest sides in the transfer window as they looked to bolster their squad.

After securing the future of manager Kieran McKenna amid interest from sides across the top flight, they invested heavily in their squad as they look to avoid a drop straight back to the Championship.

Omari Hutchinson led the spending, as the Tractor Boys turned his loan move into a permanent one for a fee just shy of £20m, while they also plundered the Championship to sign Arijanet Muric, Jacob Greaves, Jack Clarke, Dara O’Shea and Sammie Szmodics.

Ipswich Town’s new signings summer 2024
Player Fee (as per Transfermarkt)
Omari Hutchinson €23.5m
Jacob Greaves €21.5m
Liam Delap €17.85m
Jack Clarke €17.7m
Dara O’Shea €14.2m
Sammie Szmodics €10.6m
Arijanet Muric €9.55m
Chiedoze Ogbene €9.5m
Conor Townsend €590k
Jens Cajuste Loan
Kalvin Phillips Loan
Ben Johnson Free

Liam Delap and Kalvin Phillips, both of Manchester City, were also signed; Delap secured a long-term contract at Portman Road, while Phillips joined the East Anglian team on loan.

The East Anglian team is just two points above the relegation zone after four Premier League games, and despite this transfer activity, there are still holes in the squad. McKenna is still waiting for his first Premier League victory as a manager. The team has lost to Liverpool and Manchester City and drawn to Fulham and Brighton.

Consequently, more transfer activity is anticipated in January, and a prospective target has now surfaced.

Ipswich keen on £200k-a-week defender

This coincides with The Sun’s report that McKenna’s team is considering a surprise January signing of Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell, who is trying to find a way out of Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca officially labelled the England international a misfit during the summer, and the Blues manager gave an explanation:

“When you train every day and not get any minutes it is not good for them or for me and I need to make a decision.”

“It’s probably best to get out and get some minutes. We’ll wait and see what transpires since the transfer window is open.”

Chilwell, who was listed in Chelsea’s Premier League squad for the first half of the season, was unable to find a move away and was instead reintegrated into the first team.

But it’s obvious that Chelsea doesn’t want him, and since Marc Cucurella and summer acquisition Renato Veiga rank higher than him, an exit seems imminent, as the Blues are eager to cut his £200,000 weekly salary.

According to The Sun, Ipswich is “red alert” about a possible January transfer, which would probably involve a loan given the England international’s pay demands.

Leif Davis, the current fullback who thrived in the Championship but has seen his defensive prowess overused in the Premier League season’s early going, may be able to rotate a bit with his arrival. In the meantime, Ipswich would be acquiring a player in Chilwell who former manager Frank Lampard had called “fantastic” and who had plenty to prove.

“In my opinion, Ben Chilwell made a wonderful contribution in every way. He scores a goal, provides an assist, and never hesitates to get involved. During his first season with the team, Lampard said, “He’s Premier League ready, we know that having played in this league as well as he has for Leicester and he looked like he’d played for us for a long time.”

It might be a wise decision that benefits both sides and increases Ipswich’s chances of surviving.
