The 24-year-old failed to catch the ball in the final moments of Leeds’ Championship match against Sunderland last Friday (October 4). This mistake ultimately cost his team two points, resulting in a 2-2 draw against the Black Cats. Leeds appeared to be on track for a win until that error occurred, but sources tell Football Insider that Meslier still has Daniel Farke’s full support. Although Karl Darlow serves as the backup and brings experience and quality, Leeds will not replace Meslier. The goalkeeper is expected to start the first game after the international break as the club aims to provide him with complete backing.
Leeds United view Illan Meslier’s error as a ‘freak issue’
Despite the costly mistake, the Whites see it as a “freak issue” rather than a long-term concern. Meslier won’t be judged on just this one moment, which is why he will remain the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. Since joining the club, the Frenchman has made 184 appearances and kept 56 clean sheets.
The West Yorkshire team is currently in fifth place in the Championship as they head into the international break. Farke’s squad will be back in action on Friday, October 18, for a derby match against Sheffield United.
