Payne’s autopsy ruled out ‘self-harm of any kind and/or physical intervention by third parties.
Three individuals are facing charges following the tragic death of Liam Payne, the former One Direction singer, who passed away in Buenos Aires on October 16. Payne reportedly fell from the third floor of his hotel in the Palermo neighborhood, and an investigation by Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office has led to charges related to “illicit conduct” in connection with his death.
The investigation revealed that Payne had “multiple substances” in his system at the time of the incident, including alcohol, cocaine, a prescription antidepressant, and a recreational drug known as “pink cocaine.” This finding raised suspicions, leading the prosecutor’s office to charge three people with abandonment of a person followed by death, as well as supply and facilitation of narcotics.
One of the accused individuals, reportedly someone who accompanied Payne throughout his stay, is charged with abandoning him during his time of need. A hotel employee who allegedly supplied Payne with cocaine is also facing charges, along with a drug supplier who reportedly provided drugs to Payne twice in the days preceding his death.
According to a hotel manager’s report, staff were concerned about Payne’s behavior and had contacted police for assistance, expressing worry that he might harm himself. Toxicology results concluded that Payne had engaged in polydrug use during the 72 hours leading up to his death. An autopsy revealed he died from “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhage” resulting from the fall. However, the report ruled out both self-harm and external intervention, indicating that Payne may have been in a semi-conscious state during the fall.
In response to Payne’s death, his former bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt statement, sharing on Instagram that they were “devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.” They asked for privacy to grieve and honor the memory of their friend, whom they referred to as a “brother.”
