At The Den on Saturday, the Lions defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 to earn their first victory of the new season. Duncan Watmore scored the game’s second goal.
Within the first month of the current season, the 30-year-old has already scored four goals in four Championship games, equal his goal total for the whole 2023–24 campaign.
He scored twice in Millwall’s opening day loss to Watford at home. The following week, the Lions suffered a defeat at Ashton Gate to Bristol City.
Nonetheless, Millwall supporters will be hoping that his goal against the Owls may help Neil Harris’ team win all three points on a regular basis for the rest of the season.
Duncan Watmore has been in great form for Millwall
Watmore joined Millwall from Middlesbrough at the close of the January transfer window in 2023, and he has played in 54 Championship games for the team ever then.
He has 11 league goals in that time, six of which have come in the last eight games in the second division for the Lions. The winger had his most productive season of his senior career to date with nine goals for Boro in the 2020–21 Championship campaign.
Although it was somewhat of a surprise, Watmore’s goal-scoring ability has arrived at a favourable moment for Millwall, particularly with strikers Tom Bradshaw and Mihailo Ivanovic currently sidelined due to injuries and new signing Macaulay Langstaff still yet to score for his new team.
Josh Coburn, a strong attacker who followed in Watmore’s footsteps and moved from Middlesbrough to Millwall this summer, scored in his debut game against Sheffield Wednesday this past weekend.
Neil Harris will be hoping that Watmore can keep finding the back of the net and make sure the Lions have enough firepower to provide themselves the foundation for a successful season, as Coburn is the only fit Millwall striker who has scored a goal this season.
The next couple of months will be important for Millwall
After suffering a hamstring injury during Millwall’s Carabao Cup second round loss to Leyton Orient, Bradshaw is expected to miss ten weeks of action, while club record signing Ivanovic could be out for up to two months.
Coburn may face pressure to be a consistent goal scorer while Millwall’s other strikers heal from their injuries because Langstaff has not scored in any of his first six appearances for the Lions since joining the team from League Two side Notts County this summer.

Millwall’s performance in the upcoming months could have a significant effect on the remainder of the season. They do not want to suffer a poor run of play at this time, especially with winnable home games against Devon Argyle and Derby County scheduled for October, if they want to be looking up rather than over their shoulders in the final weeks of the season.
It would be a huge help to Millwall’s chances to put together a few wins, keep going, and aim for at least a top-half finish at the end of the season if Watmore can maintain his excellent form and keep scoring goals in the Championship.
