Just two days after being released by the Minnesota Vikings, running back Kene Nwangwu is once again on waivers. The New Orleans Saints had claimed the former Vikings’ fourth-round pick and All-Pro kick returner, but they have now placed him back on waivers after he did not pass his physical, as reported by ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.
This situation may provide some insight into why the Vikings decided to cut him, though different teams may have varying physical standards for players. Nwangwu appeared to be a candidate for the Vikings’ kick returner role this season before his unexpected release. There’s a possibility he could return to Minnesota’s practice squad, but the team may have other plans for the kick returner position.
Despite not having much experience as a running back in the NFL, Nwangwu has been highly effective as a return specialist. In his first three seasons, he had 68 returns for 1,879 yards and three touchdowns, earning Second Team All-Pro honors in 2022. His return skills could be especially valuable with the NFL’s new kickoff rules this season. We’ll see if another team places a claim for him in the next 24 hours or shows interest in him otherwise.
