How the Astros intend to use Justin Verlander in the postseason
Houston In an attempt to gain a better perspective, Justin Verlander went closer to the foul line on Sunday night when the first of Pavin Smith’s fly balls soared into the right-field corner of Minute Maid Park. The pitcher leaned slightly to the right, as if to will the ball to foul, as he watched it approach the foul pole.
However, Verlander’s shoulders, face, and possibly even his soul slumped when it struck the pole for a three-run home run. In order to improve on his first three subpar games since being activated off the disabled list, he needed some good fortune early in this start. Rather, he was already significantly down when the second inning had hardly begun.Verlander never made a full recovery. The following inning, Smith crushed yet another home run, a grand slam, capping one of the worst performances of a career that will eventually culminate in the pitcher giving a speech in Cooperstown.
Verlander lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-0 after three innings pitched. He offered to pitch longer for manager Joe Espada, knowing that the Houston Astros’ bullpen was drawing to a close and could take on one or two more innings, if needed. Espada concluded his night after thanking him for the offer. Early in 2017, Verlander gave up nine runs, the most runs he has ever given up in any of his 523 starts.
“He’s getting over it, dude,” Espada remarked following the match. “Anyone with that lineage is someone I wouldn’t bet against. I’m sure he’ll return and work through some issues. We must start over from scratch.”
“I felt good physically, but obviously the results were,” Verlander stated.
He hesitated a bit, trying to think of a suitable word. “Atrocious.”Verlander has already experienced career turning points and times when he struggled and had to make changes to his mechanics, body, and pitch mix. But he’s never encountered the circumstance he does today. Verlander, who was born forty-one years, five months, and two days ago, is currently the oldest pitcher in the major leagues with three weeks left in the regular season.
