Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez of the Astros want to continue their winning ways against the D-backs.
In a matchup that saw both Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez post multi-hit performances to ignite an explosive outburst from the top of the lineup, the Houston Astros defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 11-5 on Saturday to seal the three-game interleague series.
In the first game of the series, Altuve and Alvarez combined to go 5-for-8 with four runs and seven RBIs. With a six-game home winning streak and a series sweep in store for the Astros (77-65) against the Diamondbacks (79-64) on Sunday, both players had three-hit games on Saturday.
The performance of the final four batters in the lineup was vital to the productivity that Altuve and Alvarez provided in the first two positions of the order. The Diamondbacks’ struggling staff was dealt a cruel blow as Victor Caratini, Jake Meyers, Ben Gamel, and Chas McCormick combined for five runs, three hits, two RBIs, and two walks. This set the stage for the huge bats at the top of the order.
Astros manager Joe Espada stated, “That creates opportunity for Altuve and Yordan to come up with people on base.” “Getting people on base keeps the line flowing and it trickles down, rather than them finding their own opportunity to push each other in. And you’re scoring ten, eleven runs now.
“Our offensive has demonstrated that in the past. It’s wonderful if we can have it going now, in September, and if those guys at the bottom can regularly produce. That is our desired outcome.”
After coming off the injured list, Houston right-hander Justin Verlander (3-5, 4.52 ERA) will make his fourth start on Sunday.
After missing 54 games due to neck discomfort, Verlander is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA and has not yet recovered to his previous level of play. After returning to the rotation, he has only recorded 12 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings. On Monday, he only recorded three strikeouts in a 5-3 loss against the Cincinnati Reds, giving up five runs on eight hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Throughout his seven career starts versus the Diamondbacks, Verlander is 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA. On September 30, 2023, Verlander made his prior start against them and went five innings without giving up a run while giving up two hits, three walks, and five strikeouts in the Astros’ 1-0 away victory.
In an effort to prevent a sweep, Arizona’s right-hander Ryne Nelson (10-6, 4.15 ERA) will start the series finale.
Over his last 12 appearances (11 starts), Nelson has a 2.76 ERA and is 5-0 against opponents. In six and a third innings, he gave up two runs on four hits, two walks, and a season-high tying nine strikeouts in an 8-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.
