Houston Right fielder Kyle Tucker and third baseman Alex Bregman both have injuries that might not fully heal until the end of the season, so the next three-plus weeks of the regular season will likely be a juggling act for Astros manager Joe Espada.

Prior to Friday’s game against the D-backs, Tucker was activated from the disabled list. He had been out for three months due to a fractured right shin sustained on June 3 when he fouled a ball off it. For the series, he was listed as the designated hitter. This season, seven additional players—including mid-season additions Ben Gamel and Jason Heyward—started a game in right field.

For the past three weeks, Bregman has been suffering with inflammation in his right elbow, which has caused him to miss multiple games. He started three other games as designated hitter while missing five straight games (Aug. 16–20) and four straight games (Aug. 30-Sept. 2). Friday against Arizona, Bregman was not in the starting lineup.Espada remarked, “He’s doing well, but he’s a little sore today.” “We are attempting to keep an eye on the number of consecutive games played, but he is in good health.”

Espada remarked, “He’s doing well, but he’s a little sore today.” We’re attempting to keep an eye on the number of consecutive games,The fact that the team wishes to restrict the amount of time slugger Yordan Alvarez spends in left field further complicates things for Espada. Tucker and/or Bregman won’t be able to play that position on the days he starts at DH.

Espada remarked, “It takes a lot of discipline because we have [21] games left and I want those guys in there, but we also want them out there healthy.” “The objective is for them to play consecutive games, so it will take some time and patience, as well as our judgment in knowing when and how to do it.”Complicating matters for Espada is the team’s desire to limit the amount of time slugger Yordan Alvarez spends in left field. On the days he starts at DH, Tucker and/or Bregman won’t be able to play that position.
