Saints announce starting quarterback after firing Dennis Allen

On Monday morning, the New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen before he finished his third season. After getting fired Monday, Allen issued a classy message for Saints fans. “Of course I’m disappointed but I love that organization, I love the people in there and will always have so much love for the city of New Orleans.

I always will!” Allen said. Allen owned a record of 18-25 during his tenure with the Saints, though that record sat at 18-18 following a 2-0 start to the 2024 season. Seven straight losses later, including a final one to the Carolina Panthers, doomed the head coach.

“Dennis has been part of our organization for many years. He is highly regarded within the NFL. He has been extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us. All of this makes today very tough for me and our organization,” Saints Owner Gayle Benson offered in a statement.

“However, this decision is something that I felt we needed to make at this time. I wish nothing but the best in the future for Dennis and his family.

He will always be considered in the highest regard by me and everyone within our organization.” In the team’s announcement, Benson revealed special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi as the interim head coach.

Rizzi spoke with the media on Monday afternoon and revealed the team’s starting quarterback. He’s not turning his back on Derek Carr. “Derek Carr is going to be the quarterback on Sunday. … I’m not going down that road,” he said.

In six games played this season, Carr is completing nearly 68-percent of his passes for 1,226 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. He’ll get the chance to show Rizzi made the right decision when he steps on the field against the Atlanta Falcons next weekend.
