The Philadelphia Eagles’ secondary may receive a boost ahead of their Week 7 game against the New York Giants. According to Jeff McLane of the *Philadelphia Inquirer*, second-year safety Sydney Brown is likely to be activated from injured reserve. Initially, Brown is expected to contribute on special teams.
This is great news for the Eagles, as Brown stood out in the secondary towards the end of last season. The 24-year-old safety tore his ACL in Week 18 during punt coverage against the Giants.
A former third-round pick, Brown had his practice window opened last week after starting training camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
Last season, Brown recorded 45 tackles, three pass deflections, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss, and an interception returned for a 99-yard touchdown. His interception came in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals.
The 5-foot-10 defensive back made six starts in his rookie season, playing 35% of defensive snaps and 59% of special teams snaps. Once he’s back to form on special teams, it’s likely defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will gradually integrate him into the defensive rotation.
Fangio has already shown confidence in giving young secondary players more snaps, as seen in last week’s win against the Cleveland Browns.
