Giants’ Hyatt: “I’ll be ready when my chance comes.”

IN RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSY — Jalin Hyatt was moving quickly down the corridor in the basement of MetLife Stadium and out of the locker room. Wearing blinders and dressed in street clothes, he was unable to hear a reporter’s hello.
Reliving the dismal 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the New York Giants’ season opener, Hyatt still wore his eye black. After only 15 snaps overall, and only four through the first three quarters of the Week 1 game, he was out of the locker room and the stadium without taking a shower. The Washington Commanders defeated the second-year receiver 21–18 in Week 2, with the receiver seeing just 11 snaps of action.
He only had one goal, which was a drop during the first game’s fourth quarter. Hyatt acknowledges he should have made the leaping grab because it was a high throw.
In two games this season, there have been no catches and one target.
If Hyatt had been informed that before the season, he “would’ve looked at you crazy.” “It really is disappointing. I’m not going to sit here and pretend like everything is alright. I’m not. Still, one could ask, “What can I do now?” I have two options: either I attack each day and continue improving at practice, or I sit here and mope and be angry at the world and not get better.”
The Giants moved up for Tennessee’s third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, but this is a far cry from what was anticipated of him. After a productive offseason, Hyatt played much of the summer as the team’s number-two receiver, splitting time with youngster Malik Nabers throughout training camp and the spring.
Then something altered. Around the time of the Houston Texans’ second preseason game in late August, Hyatt dropped out of Darius Slayton’s depth chart. Even though he was aware that he and Slayton were in competition, it still felt like a whole 180 and hadn’t altered much in the previous two weeks.
The Giants’ response is that, as a tried-and-true veteran, Slayton is currently the superior choice.
“That’s not Jalin Hyatt’s fault,” head coach Brian Daboll reiterated. “[Slayton] is handling his opportunities to complete the tasks at hand quite well. Then, we strew Hyatt throughout specific plays. Malik Nabers, a rookie wide receiver, has spent the most of his time on the field, so Hyatt will be prepared to play when his number is called.”
As recently as Wednesday morning, Daboll assured Hyatt that his opportunities will present themselves. Just take your time. Hyatt was among the first in line for wide receiver drills throughout practice and seemed totally focused. Daboll and he appeared.
