ITS OVER Commanders Accepting Trade Requests at No. 2 Should Vikings Make an Offer Walker, Herschel The 2.0 Bundle

In an attempt to select their quarterback of the future, the Minnesota Vikings are aiming to move up into the top-5 of the NFL Draft.According to one early Saturday morning report, Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy is their goal. How far will they have to reach at the top of the draft to get JJ or any other QB they want?

Caleb Williams is expected to be selected by the Chicago Bears with the first overall pick. They are not giving up on that pick after trading Justin Fields for pennies on the dollar. But if general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah truly wanted to ensure that head coach Kevin O’Connell got the quarterback prospect he covets, aside from Williams, might the Vikings go as high as No. 2, which is now owned by the Washington Commanders?

Geoff Burke/USA TODAY Sports is seen. In fact, Washington general manager Adam Peters has been fielding calls regarding the No. 2 overall pick, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (one of us) that he has not yet received an offer compelling enough to effectively trade away their quarterback of the future.

“Yes, I would say that the phone is ringing, and the reason for that is the talent of the [QB] group this year, as you mentioned,” Quinn remarked. “Therefore, I would expect [Adam Peters] to take these calls as they come in.”

“A lot of the time, the response is no, along the lines of ‘Thanks for calling,’ but it is a necessary step in the process, so you have to be careful to listen and find out whether there is something you just can not refuse.”

Quinn points out that it is your responsibility to consider the numerous trade offers you will probably receive when selecting in the top-5, particularly in a quality QB crop like this one. Why? For you never know, you might get one that is simply too amazing to pass up. Dan then brought up the now-famous Herschel Walker trade.

Commanders expecting a trade package from the Vikings involving Herschel Walker?

Quinn points out that the Cowboys organization, where Walker served as defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2023, continues to discuss the Walker deal and how it altered the franchise’s history.

When I was a member of the Cowboys, years ago, I passed by it in the hallway during a deal that included Herschel Walker and other draft picks and significantly altered their organization. Because of this, I believe that any employee with Adam’s caliber of talents will pay attention, but there are only so many factors you can take into account, so it had better be excellent.

Of course, the fact that no one recalls this historic exchange is that, at the time, the Vikings were well regarded for it. Most of the players in the transaction were of medium talent. Once the Cowboys released the players that Minnesota had traded them, they had the genius to use the draft capital that was built into the deal [more on all that here].

I do not want to imply that Dan Quinn is challenging Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell to call his general manager and make such an outrageous offer that, if it does not work out, they will also lose their jobs. However, they would rank among the worst transactions in the annals of professional sports.

Like, “Hey guys, tell me how much you like Maye, McCarthy, or Daniels.” Come get him if that is how badly you want him. I defy you. However, if the Commander’s phone has indeed been ringing, I will wager my right pinky toe that one of the teams on the other end of the call has been the Vikings.

Given the aforementioned remarks, it is also clear that Quinn and his general manager, Adam Peters, would prefer to go down in history as the Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones of a Herschel Walker 2.0 trade. Hopefully, the Vikings will not have to make such kind of offer in order to acquire their quarterback. And if they do, hopefully it turns out better than any deal including Herschel Walker.
