Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, stirred controversy by expressing dissatisfaction with their current stadium, the City Ground, deeming it inadequate for the club’s stature and aspirations. This has sparked debate and resistance among fans, with many opposing the idea of relocation.

A potential move to a new 50,000-seat stadium in Toton, six miles away from Nottingham city center and near the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border, has been proposed. Discussions with Nottinghamshire County Council have taken place regarding this site, which could develop into a sports village. Forest currently lease the City Ground from Nottingham City Council for £250,000 annually, with negotiations for extending the lease, which expires in 33 years, at a standstill. The City Council is open to selling the land on which the stadium sits for around £10m.

Given the fierce rivalry between Derby County and Nottingham Forest, Derby fans have been vocal about their thoughts on Forest’s potential relocation. Some have pointed out the proximity of the proposed site to Pride Park, Derby’s stadium, while others have made light-hearted comments about potential new names for Forest if they were to move.

There’s speculation about whether a move to Toton would attract more fans from the Derby area but potentially lose support from the eastern side of Nottingham. Overall, the situation has sparked a mix of opinions and debates among football fans.
