Matthew Phillips has disclosed how Des Buckingham’s tactical guidance helped him score his first goal for Oxford United.
The 33-year-old scored just before halftime to cap off an outstanding performance out wide as the U’s easily defeated Peterborough United in the Carabao Cup.
United had already taken the lead with a goal from Tyler Goodrham, and Phillips doubled that lead with a poke after Louie Sibley’s outstanding play to get to the byline and drag the ball back for Phillips in the six-yard box.
According to Phillips, there was definitely a lot more that he could have accomplished in his career. It was gratifying that it worked since there are always goals to be had at that back post.
“It was very satisfying to get a goal,” the manager said before to the game. “The opposite wide player gets in the box to add numbers there.”
“I know I can set up goals and score goals for myself, so my game is to get more goals and assists and do whatever I can to help the team.”
“It’s another feather in your cap if you can pose the opposition with different threats,” he continued. The manager’s options are a good thing, and everyone needs to encourage one another to keep the jersey on.
