Zach Frazier Responds to Johnny Newton’s ‘Tell’ Comments from Successful Hard Count
West Virginia center Zach Frazier has responded to comments made by Illinois defensive tackle Johnny Newton, who recently pointed out a “tell” in Frazier’s hard count during the teams’ matchup. Newton claimed that Frazier had a noticeable pre-snap habit that gave away when the Mountaineers were planning to snap the ball, leading to a successful hard count by West Virginia’s offense that forced Illinois to jump offsides.
In a recent interview, Frazier acknowledged the comment but downplayed its significance. “I don’t think it’s something that’s a major issue,” Frazier said. “Every player has tendencies, and it’s part of the game to adjust. I’ve looked at the tape, and we’ll continue to work on eliminating any cues that could give the defense an advantage.”
Frazier’s ability to snap the ball on cue is a key element of his leadership on the offensive line, and while he admitted to having certain pre-snap movements, he also pointed out that he takes pride in his consistency and communication with his teammates. The hard count, which caused Illinois defenders to jump offsides, is often used as a strategic tool to gain free yardage or create confusion at the line of scrimmage.
Despite Newton’s comment, Frazier remains confident in his technique and in the Mountaineers’ ability to adjust. “We’ve been working on our cadence and making sure we can throw off the defense in different ways,” Frazier added. “It’s part of the chess match that happens every week.”
As the season progresses, Frazier and his team will look to refine their offensive approach, always staying one step ahead of their opponents.
