Aaron Ramsey played a totally different role for Cardiff City in their 5-0 defeat against Plymouth Argyle.

The Wales captain hasn’t played for his club since August, after suffering a hamstring injury during the national team’s September camp.

It has allowed players like Rubin Colwill to thrive in his absence, but Ramsey’s expertise will undoubtedly be a significant loss for any Championship team. And interim manager Omer Riza didn’t want to waste the 33-year-old’s knowledge, so he assigned him to assist the club with in-game analysis.

Ramsey was requested to sit in the grandstand alongside Cardiff’s analytics and provide feedback to Riza and the coaching team on how to best exploit Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims.Subscribe to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

“We had Aaron Ramsey upstairs today casting an eye down to give us some information and it all came together well today,” according to him.

“I told Aaron yesterday that I wanted him to go up there and look at the game, then come down if he saw something important.

“To be fair, when he came down and suggested a few things, it was exactly what we were thinking, which is great because we’re all on the same page.

“It’s important when you’ve got players like Rallsy (Joe Ralls) and Aaron who are experienced and aren’t playing, you have to try and use them in a different way and we did that today.”

Cardiff fans hope Ramsey will coach the Bluebirds once he retires from playing. The former Arsenal and Juventus player presently possesses an A licence, and Wales manager Craig Bellamy stated earlier this month that he was confident his captain would one day be a wonderful coach.

“I can see that side of him [management]… “I believe it’s beginning to circle, as it does later in your career,” Bellamy remarked.

“I’m quietly sure that he will see that side of the game for himself. With his experiences, skills, and comprehension of the game, I’d be astonished if it wasn’t at a high level.”
