After his dreadful performance against Ross County, Philippe Clement ought to back out of the verbal agreement between Rangers and John Lundstram regarding a new contract for the midfield player.
Despite the impending summer transfer window, Lundstram’s current contract expires at the end of this season, and new terms have not yet been agreed upon.
But on March 18, writer Chris Jack of the Rangers Review had already disclosed that “all parties were in agreement that a new contract is the way forward.”
But with the surprise 3-2 loss to Ross County, Clement could be justified in questioning whether that deal is best for the team.
There should be no new contract for John Lundstram at the Rangers.
Although Lundstram, 30, is one of the more seasoned and senior players on this Rangers team, his expertise was completely lacking at Victoria Park as Ross County ran wild.
The Englishman was not up to par against Don Cowie’s team, despite being expected to be the engine of Clement’s team and dictate play from the base of midfield.
Lundstram seemed to be primarily concerned with maintaining possessions safely. He had a high touch total of 108 and completed 83 of his 92 passes for a 90% pass accuracy [FotMob], but those stats are useless if he doesn’t use the ball well, which he didn’t.
Additionally, he was just as ineffective while not in possession of the ball, unable to establish himself from the middle of the field and being entirely ignored for two of Ross County’s three goals.
Should he maintain these kinds of performances, Clement might conclude that it would be wiser to hunt for a replacement midfield player this summer.
