Gers icon who turned down Man Utd to move to Ibrox sends Old Firm title battle cry

Fashion Sakala Jnr of Rangers celebrates his goal with his team mates during the Scottish Premiership match at Fir Park, Motherwell.

From 1997 to 2003, the Italian Stallion spent six years at Ibrox, briefly captaining the club after joining from Fiorentina for £4 million.

Lorenzo Amoruso, who famously turned down Manchester United to join Rangers, is still one of the club’s most popular European stars.

The Italian TV personality has resorted to Instagram to send a war cry to the Rangers team ahead of a tight title run-in with Old Firm rivals, Celtic.

Amoruso sends rousing Rangers Instagram post

Lorenzo Amoruso wore his emotions on his sleeve while playing for the Rangers.

Amo was a powerful, authoritative defender with the ability to play long-range worldies. It feels like his heyday was a generation ago and then some.

Amoruso, sometimes referred to as the best Italian defender who was never capped for his country, dedicated a significant portion of his career to Rangers and gave his all on the field for the club.

Now, the massive defender has taken to Instagram with a rousing post, sharing photos of his achievement and what it means to win at Ibrox.

“If you know your enemy as well as yourself, you will win. If you know yourself but not the enemy, you have equal chances of winning and losing. If you don’t know the adversary or yourself, you’ll win every war.”

Ex-Rangers defender left legacy of trophies

The Italian defender won nine trophies with the Ibrox club, including three Scottish Premiership crowns.

Interestingly, the centre-back was also a member of the last club to win a treble at Ibrox, with this year’s squad tasked with matching them in a tight clash with Celtic.

Lorenzo Amoruso and his Rangers teammates held their nerve to win the title on the last day of the season in 2002/03, and Philippe Clement’s club may have to do the same this time around.

The defender also scored the winner in the Scottish Cup Final that season, capping up his Rangers career on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Dundee.

Now, it’s evident that big Amo is keeping an eye on things in Glasgow this season, with the club never far away from the now 52-year-old.

The former defender, who recently returned to New Edmiston House for a Rangers fan event, still has a deep connection to the club.
Amoruso began his career with Italian team Bari, then spent two years at Fiorentina before joining Rangers in 1997.
The defender eventually moved from Ibrox to Blackburn Rovers and the Premier League before finishing his career with Cosmos in San Marino.
