Following Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Guatemala by Ecuador, South American media offered their opinions on Jose Cifuentes, a Rangers loanee. (21 March).
Eighth-minute scorer John Yeboah gave Ecuador the lead, and in the eightieth, Gonzalo Plata sealed the triumph.
The friendly at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey featured 73 minutes of action from Cifuentes, who is on loan from Rangers to the Brazilian club Cruzeiro. Some members of the South American press were impressed by his performance.
Caio Fabio, a Brazilian journalist, stated via X on March 22 that Cifferentes is “way above average!” I am eager for him to have his first starting opportunity at Cruzeiro. I have no doubt that he will accept the role in order to avoid losing once more.
Cifuentes should “have daily contact” with the Ecuadorian national team, according to Luis Alberto Otero H (22 March), while the midfielder received an 8 out of 10 match rating from Primicias (22 March), an Ecuadorian news agency.
“It was impressive that he emerged victorious in every duels match and that he demonstrated exceptional accuracy in his long and short passes. He used today to demonstrate his qualities, refuting those who claim he neither contributes nor subtracts.
The 25-year-old, however, did not impress everyone. Mauricio Bermúdez Pesántez wrote on X on March 22 that Cifuentes showed signs of “imprecision” during the altercation.
At Ibrox, Jose Cifuentes needs to do more to win over Rangers manager Philippe Clement.
Regardless of what he performs with Ecuador or Cruzeiro, Cifuentes’ time at Rangers now seems quite distant from his youth.
Six months after coming at Ibrox, Philippe Clement sent the midfielder on a 12-month loan, calling him one of Rangers’ most disappointing summer acquisitions.
Before being shipped to Brazil, Cifuentes started just six Scottish Premiership games. After joining the team, Clement seldom used the Ecuadorian at Ibrox.
Cifuentes will need to do much more than play a mixed game against Guatemala in an international friendly if he hopes to convince Clement that sending him out on loan was a mistake.
For Cruzeiro, Cifuentes has not yet made a start, which will worry viewers in Scotland.
Although Cifuentes seems to have made some progress on Thursday night, if he is to have any chance of saving his career with the Gers, he needs to build on this momentum when he plays again with Cruzeiro.
