On Friday, March 22, Nigeria defeated Ghana with the help of Rangers attacker Cyriel Dessers.
After the 29-year-old put his team ahead with a penalty kick in the first half, he was given the chance to lead the Super Eagles’ line.
The Black Stars’ Jordan Ayew secured a late consolation from the spot to ensure the friendly concluded 2-1 in Marrakech after Ademola Lookman increased the advantage for his side.
The Nigerian news website soccernet.ng gave Dessers a 7.2 rating, noting that his partnership with Leicester City attacker Kelechi Iheanacho looked “promising” and praising him for his performance and “well-taken spot-kick.”
The forward was a “menace” leading the line for the Super Eagles, according to Allnigeriasoccer.com, which gave him a 7 for “contributing significantly” to his country’s attacking threat in their victory. The forward maintained his composure from the spot.
The praise for Dessers did not stop coming in; in what was arguably his best performance wearing a Nigerian shirt, Afrik-Foot gave him the highest rating of any outfield player, 8.5, praising his link-up play as “superb.”
Good news for Rangers after Cyriel Dessers’ Nigerian performance
Dessers’ excellent performance for Nigeria is encouraging for Rangers because, when he is playing with confidence, he is a totally different player.
He was left out of the team that advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year, so he will undoubtedly be trying to make up for lost time at the international level.
His immediate promotion to the starting lineup indicates that interim boss Finidi George is obviously pleased with his recent play for the Gers.
Although it was only the forward’s second goal for the Super Eagles, he will be hoping to have made an impression enough to be included in the starting lineup for the 26th March match against Mali.
To help the Light Blues contend for titles this season, Philippe Clement will be hopeful that the striker returns from the international break in high spirits.
