With the contract update, Rangers should be on high alert for the Ibrox-linked star.

With just a few Scottish Premiership games left for Rangers, the summer transfer window is drawing near, and speculation is starting to circulate.

Borna Barisic’s possible summer departure is already a concern for Philippe Clement, since Trabzonspor has made a transfer bid for him ahead of the deadline.[Scottish Football]

Even though the transaction hasn’t been finalized yet, the Gers might not have a full-back a few days into the summer transfer window, which would leave Ridvan Yilmaz—who might also depart Ibrox—at left back.

Gijs Smal suggests an obvious substitute for Philippe Clement at Rangers

Gijs Smal of FC Twente is a player who the Ibrox supporters are quite familiar with thanks to the January transfer window, when the club approached the player about joining Rangers.[International Soccer]

The 26-year-old defender clearly never made the transfer happen because he continued to play for FC Twente in the Netherlands, starting 16 of their 26 league games this season.

Despite the fact that the Gers lost out on Smal, the Dutch club’s announcement last week gives Rangers another opportunity to sign him this summer.

Smal is one of three players whose contracts expire at the end of the current campaign, according to the official club website [23 March]. He has stated that he will not sign an extension before the summer.

Rangers, you imagine, must be keeping an eye on the 26-year-old given the news surrounding current full-back Barisic and the numerous stories from January indicating that Yilmaz was only inches away from a move to Galatasaray.

Smal is the ideal addition to Clement’s team as an attacking full-back, even though he has fallen down the rankings this season and is playing in less than optimal form.

It seems like a no-brainer for the Gers because he will be available on a free transfer. They must act quickly, though, as Celtic, an Old Firm rival, might give the player another look.

Rangers first became interested in Smal since he had already demonstrated his abilities. He made a lot of clubs take note of his two goals and ten assists in the Eredivisie last season.
