Roger Federer was certainly the most beloved tennis player of the modern era. The former Swiss champion has been idolized in every corner of the world and has brought tennis to many people. His career officially ended at the 2022 Laver Cup, where he played his last match alongside his eternal rival Rafael Nadal at the O2 Arena in London.
The last two years of his career were particularly difficult because of a serious knee injury, which forced him to undergo several surgeries. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has tried his best to be competitive again, but he had to give up on his body. Federer held many records for a long time, before Rafael Nadal and especially Novak Djokovic took them away. The Spaniard and Serbian have won more Grand Slam titles than the Swiss, but King Roger’s popularity continues to be unsurpassed.

In a recent interview with ‘We Love Tennis’, Ion Tiriac paid tribute to the Swiss legend: “Actually, I know very little about Roger Federer but he always respected me. Like the other stars on the tour, he calls me the chef. I sincerely think that he is really a category apart if we compare him to Nadal or Djokovic for example. He’s a player who invented things on a tennis court that didn’t exist. Physically, he was always a little below Djokovic and Nadal, but the talent he had in his hands is a certainty.”
The 20-time Grand Slam champion has played many epic matches during his long career and has delighted fans with his all-court tennis. Speaking with Vogue a few days ago, King Roger revealed the most important match of his career: “I don’t know the date, per se — it’s not ingrained in my brain — but that match against Pete Sampras is my favourite match of all time.

It had everything: He was my hero at the time, and this was both my first time and my only time to play against Sampras. It was the first time I played on Centre Court at the Wimbledon Championships, and it turned into five sets. There was just so much going on in my head, it was fairytale stuff. And I don’t know if this was the first time or the second time in my career when I cried after winning.
I cried when I beat the Americans 3-1 at the Davis Cup in Basel, my hometown, and I was able to help the team with three points to win it and clinch it, but I don’t remember if that was before or after — but when I went onto my knees after my forehand return against Sampras landed in and all of that pressure just fell away, I started crying. I’m like, This is surreal — what is going on? But I guess Wimbledon and Sampras and Centre Court, I don’t know—all of that does that to you. And that’s when you realise: ‘Oh — the hard work’s paying off. You’re on the right track.’ It’s a milestone victory. It was like the perfect match.”

Recently, WTA legend Serena Williams revealed that she studied Federer’s game: “My career was weirdly parallel with Roger Federer. He and I were the same age, and I always looked up to Roger in a way. He always knew how to handle every single situation and he always knew how to win. I would study his game and I would say, how do I hit the ball early? How do I move like that? How do I have that footwork like Roger Federer? Like I want to study him because he is the best.”
The Swiss has been cultivating all his passions since he stopped playing tennis and spends much more time with his family. The former world number 1 is still working to improve his knee condition and hopes to arrange some exhibition matches in the future. Tickets would be sold out in minutes.
