The San Antonio Spurs announced on Saturday that Victor Wembanyama will miss the team’s final game of the season in order to recover from a sore ankle sustained during Friday’s incredible upset of the Denver Nuggets.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama is congratulated by Denver's Nikola Jokic after Friday's upset against the Nuggets

With a right ankle injury, the 20-year-old French sensation, who is almost a lock to win the NBA’s rookie of the year award, was declared ineligible for Sunday’s game against Detroit.

Wembanyama’s spectacular rookie season in the NBA has ended prematurely, according to the announcement, with his final performance coming on Friday night in a 34-point performance against the NBA champion Nuggets.

At the end of the season, Wembanyama averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

Wembanyama was hailed as a generational talent on par with LeBron James when he entered the NBA last year as the top pick in the draft.

Wembanyama’s remarkable performances have amazed coaches, teammates, and fans despite the Spurs having another losing season and currently occupying the bottom spot in the Western Conference.

He led the Spurs to an upset victory over the Nuggets on Friday, reversing a 23-point second-half deficit and upending the Western Conference race for the top seed.

A standout moment in his performance came in the third quarter, when he scored 17 points in just three minutes.

Wembanyama remarked following the victory, “It just makes every win feel even more special.”

It’s significant to us as a young, developing team. These kinds of victories will be necessary in the future.”
