Victor Wembanyama is a player who Draymond Green believes has a good chance of earning Defensive Player of the Year. Though at first he had doubts over Wemby’s defense, Draymond went on his podcast to support Wemby’s candidacy for DPOY.
“I told a falsehood… Wemby is such an incredible defensive player that he ought to win defensive player of the year. He has a problem because of the way he affects the game defensively, both on and off the ball. In some ways, it is a blocked shot when you drive to the hole and someone else may have a layup and turn the other way.
Draymond went on to explain, “Wemby was built in a lab.”
“I do not know what lab he was created in but I need to create me a son in that lab because the dude is unbelievable.”
After Green and Wembanyama squared off in a recent Warriors vs. Spurs game, Draymond was asked to comment on Wemby’s performance in the post-game press conference.
He is an exceptionally gifted individual. They will have to deal with him much later, and I will no longer be in the league, so it is wonderful for me that I got the chance to play against him now.”
As a rookie, Wembanyama is having a fantastic season, averaging 21.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 blocks.Tim Duncan would be pleased with Wemby’s immediate influence. Wemby and Duncan are not the same because Tim helped the Spurs win the championship right away, whereas Wemby is unable to do so because of a subpar supporting group.
Does Success Mean Everything To You?
Wembanyama’s contributions to the defense are statistically unmatched by any other player. In any case, he is leading rookie in practically every counting stat category and tops the NBA in shot blocking. Despite his small stature, he ranks 20th in the department for steals, demonstrating an amazing ability to push for steals.
Wembanyama is leading the Spurs to a defense rating of 117.2 on the court as of March 2024. Upon his departure from the court, that figure soars to 123.1. Wembanyama has also become better over the course of the season, and the Spurs’ defense finished in the top three in March thanks to his minutes on the floor.
Based on statistical analysis, Wembanyama is the only defender in the NBA who can be said to be playing more defense than any other player. However, Wemby is expected to end the season with fewer than 20 victories, so giving him this kind of recognition would be absurd.
Wembanyama’s skill and size will probably earn him the DPOY in his career, according to players like Kyrie Irving. Some players, such as Jalen Brunson, believe he will begin to challenge the best player to have ever played the game.
Regretfully, the most important thing is to win. Second place does not have trophies, and you should not expect one after a season in which your defense failed to produce even 20 victories. However, Wemby has stated clearly that he intends to pursue the prize starting in the upcoming season, and there is no stopping him.
