The San Francisco 49ers have one of the most creative offensive minds in the game.
Kyle Shanahan surely knows how to make the most of his dynamic weapons, and their plethora of offensive and versatile talent also makes things quite easier for him.
However, with the new kick-off return rules, the Niners might want to add a bit of a spark to the special teams unit as well, which is why Deebo Samuel could be in for an expanded role.
According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Smauel was one of ten players getting some reps as a kick returner in practice, and he claimed that he would definitely be more than willing to serve in that role during the season.
Samuel stated that he feels like there’s going to be a significant uptick in scoring from kick-off returns, not only for them but from all teams, so he could see himself in that role.
Needless to say, Samuel is one of the most versatile weapons in the game.
He might be the Niners’ most important player on offense, even more than Christian McCaffrey, as his versatility as a dual-threat and hybrid player opens up plenty of lanes and possibilities for their offensive scheming.
That’s why they might want to reconsider their stance on potentially using him to return kicks, as they definitely don’t want to put him in harm’s way, especially after a nagging injury last season.
But with this new rule in place, teams might have no choice but to get a little creative.
