A three-year ban and a suspended jail sentence for Leeds football supporter 

After ‘actively strangling’ a female steward at Leeds United’s match against Nottingham Forest in the 2022–2023 season, a York-based football supporter was given a three-year Football Banning Order and a suspended prison sentence.
On April 4, 2023, while supporters were departing Elland Road, Carl O’Brien of Lea Way, York, wrapped his hand around the woman’s throat and squeezed. while a result, he was charged with intentional strangulation. Although the woman reportedly only had minor wounds from the event, she was able to identify O’Brien, which sped up the arrest process.

The 51-year-old has been handed a three-year ban from English stadiums, a 20-month suspended prison sentence, a £187 fine, and 120 hours of unpaid labor to complete.

Chief Superintendent Russell Hughes said following O’Brien’s sentencing: “Violence of any kind against match stewards is absolutely not tolerated.
