According to the most recent sources, Sunderland plans to strengthen their defense this summer and has identified a former player who is presently playing in the National League.
More than four months after Michael Beale left the team, the Black Cats have finally named a new manager to take over in the dugout at the Stadium of Light. After two Ligue 1 seasons with Lorient, French coach Regis Le Bris is about to take over.
Simon Moore is the only new player the team has added since the transfer window opened two weeks ago. The goalkeeper signed a contract with Sunderland that will keep him there until 2026 with the option to stay another year. He had previously departed Coventry City after his contract with the Sky Blues expired.
The back is one area where the incoming manager might want to add players over the summer. As per Graeme Bailey’s article in HITC, Sunderland is reportedly interested in signing Gateshead defender Kenton Richardson. Richardson was a player at the Stadium of Light from 2020 to 2022, but he played in just three league games for the Black Cats. He is also the grandson of former center forward Fred Richardson of West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea, and Hartlepool United.
He went on loan twice while he was with the team, first to non-league Spennymoor Town and then to Notts County, where he scarcely appeared. The right-back did, however, remain in the Northeast after leaving Sunderland, joining Gateshead. He had a productive tenure with the Tynesiders, but it now appears that he will be returning to the EFL.
