BREAKING-Russell Martin fumes as Southampton denied at the death

Sam Morsy scores Ipswich Town's last-gasp equaliser at Southampton, September 21, 2024

Sam Morsy, the captain of Ipswich, denied Southampton’s newest academy star Tyler Dibling the lead here with an equalizer in injury time.

In just his second Premier League appearance, Dibling opened the score after five minutes with a deft finish after Adam Lallana’s brilliant pass split the defense.

Two excellent saves from Omari Hutchinson in the first half and a close-range header from George Hirst in stoppage time were denied by Aaron Ramsdale.

However, Morsy’s header clearance from Ross Stewart found him 25 yards away, and after taking a touch, the midfielder rifled a shot into the top-left corner via a large deflection from Joe Aribo, beating Ramsdale in the process.

Southampton should have ended the game well before Morsy’s goal, but Ipswich had a history of scoring goals late in the game to make their way back to the top division the previous season.

Cameron Archer had struck the base of the post halfway through the first half before Ben Brereton-Diaz blazed a spectacular chance over the bar from close range in the second half.

The traditional willowy winger Dibling plays with his socks down. Lallana, who joined the Saints when Dibling was six months old in 2006, put the England Under-19 international clear inside the box and he side-footed past Arijanet Muric. Dibling remained composed throughout.

Russell Martin made four changes to the team that lost to Manchester United last week, including the surprising starter, Lallana, who rejoined the team this summer following stints with Brighton and Liverpool.

Martin expressed his rage that his team was unable to win the match after Southampton had lost their first four games of the season, marking their worst start to a top-flight campaign since the 1998–1999 campaign.

He declared, “I’m angry and frustrated.” “We did a great job of cleaning up the game and defending too many set plays, but we still scored a great goal.”

“While I thought the performance was good overall, we ought to have ended the game sooner. Ipswich had two scoring opportunities in the second half, and they took advantage of one of them in the 96th minute.”

After excelling at Southampton, players like Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale, Matt Le Tissier, Lallana, and Theo Walcott went on to have successful careers. Dibling again shown his class by putting Mateus Fernandes in clear possession with a single pass using the outside of his right foot.

Martin stated: “He was excellent once more. He needs to get to a point where he can play for ninety minutes because he was experiencing cramps, but at eighteen, he is capable of things that other players cannot.” Watching him play football would be worth a lot of money to me.

“On the balance of play, we deserved it and it is a good point away from home,” Kieran McKenna, the Ipswich manager, stated. We were able to keep pushing and bouncing back because of the amazing enthusiasm from the crowd.
