Five players who could join Southampton before the transfer window closes

With deadline day fast approaching, the Saints will need to act fast.

Five players who could join Southampton before the transfer window closes
It has already been a busy summer for Southampton in terms of incomings, with the Saints welcoming 11 new first-team arrivals in an attempt to retain their Premier League status come May.

Despite bringing in a vast number of reinforcements, their activity in the transfer window is far from finished, with a whole host of names being thrown into the mix ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Russell Martin told the media just under a week ago to expect Southampton to be be busy until the very end and, with no new incomings since this comment, it might just be a hectic few days for the south coast club.

Here are five players who could join the Saints before the transfer window slams shut.

Starting off with the most obvious choice, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been linked with a move to Southampton all summer, although this rumour has started to gain traction in recent hours.

After opting against signing Feyenoord‘s Justin Bijlow due to complications with his medical, Southampton have reignited their interest in the Arsenal shot-stopper and have even submitted a formal proposal to the North London club, as per the reliable Fabrizio Romano.

A season-long loan plus an obligation to buy appears to be the preference for the Gunners, although their eventual asking price of £25 million would likely need to be reduced if he was to join the Saints.

If Arsenal refuse to do so, Southampton reportedly have as many as five other goalkeeping targets that they are currently working on, suggesting that either way, a new number one will come through the door before the deadline.

The Serbian is almost guaranteed to leave Turin this summer after being omitted from Thiago Motta‘s plans, and Southampton is one of a couple of clubs interested in his signature.

The 31-year-old is capable of playing as a left wing-back or left winger, occupying both positions for Eintracht Frankfurt and Juventus in the past, making him an excellent option for Russell Martin and his style of play – particular given his attacking threat after assisting 50 goals in his last five seasons.

The Serbian, who has 64 caps for his country, has reportedly always wanted to play in the Premier League, and has had previous interest from Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, whilst also being tracked by teams in Saudi Arabia this window.

It would certainly be an ambitious move but if Southampton can pull it off, it would be a very shrewd acquisition.

  • Tom Fellows (West Brom)

After impressing against Southampton towards the end of last season, as well as starting the 2024/25 campaign in excellent form, Tom Fellows is a man in-demand, with the Saints already having a £10 million bid knocked back for him.

The 21-year-old is a tricky winger who likes to be progressive when in possession, something that Southampton have been missing at the start of this season – when Tyler Dibling isn’t on the pitch, that is.

IpswichLeicester and Everton are also interested in acquiring his services and with West Brom‘s current financial situation, they may be forced to sell the England under-20 international at a cut price.

With three assists in his opening three matches, including two against Stoke last weekend, it might be time for Fellows to experience top-flight football.

  • Maxwell Cornet (West Ham)

After a flurry of incomings at West Ham this summer, a few of their fringe players are open to a move away, with Ivorian Maxwell Cornet one of these.

After signing for £17 million from Burnley in 2022, the winger has struggled to break into the side and found game-time hard to come by, something he could be offered at Southampton.

Similarly to Kostic, Cornet can play as a wing-back or winger, although his best attributes are going forward as he has a keen eye for goal – netting nine times for Burnley in his debut Premier League season.

A loan move will likely suit both sides as he still has three years left on his contract in East London, with a permanent move likely being too expensive for the Saints.

  • Yuri Alberto (Corinthians)

The final player of the five is Brazilian striker Yuri Alberto, with the player already being approached by Southampton.

The 23-year-old has scored four times and provided two assists in 18 Serie A appearances for a struggling Corinthians side so far this season, taking his total tally for the club to 43 goals.

Following the sale of Charly Alcaraz to Flamengo for £15 million, this money is reportedly going to be re-invested into the club, suggesting a move for Alberto is more than feasible.

Martin admitted in recent weeks that his side “need help” in the final third, and Alberto could be the man to bring this.
