“He didn’t quite gel” – CEO explains why he sold player to Southampton this summer

After joining Sheffield United on loan from Villarreal, Ben Brereton Diaz made an impression in the Premier League during the previous season.

After Southampton paid £7 million to acquire the Chilean international, who had made three appearances for them this season, he is back in the English premier league.

Speaking now about the club’s disposal of the striker, Villarreal CEO Fernando Roig claimed that the Saints player was partly held back by his “unlucky” time in Spain.

“It’s true that Bretton Diaz didn’t quite gel during his brief tenure there,” Roig said to Levante EMV.

“Perhaps he would have gained confidence if they had given him the legal goal that won the game at the Pizjuán last season,” he continued. He was not fortunate.

That was Roig taking a jab at what he saw to be a bad officiating call against his club. The former Sheffield United player wasn’t exactly the greatest match for the Yellow Submarines’ system, according to the CEO of the team.

“He might not have fit in completely because of our style of play, but he still has the experience of being a very good Championship player when he goes to the Premier League.”

Even if the 25-year-old hasn’t scored for the Saints yet, there is enough evidence to suggest that he may be a respectable option in the Premier League. The 25-year-old was scoreless during his time at Villarreal.

Southampton supporters would find hope in the fact that he scored six goals for the Blades the previous campaign.
