Sunderland are in a ‘very worrying’ position
Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said, “Sunderland have been linked with every potential candidate for their vacant manager’s position.
“As I’ve mentioned before, I find myself repeating this every week.
“It must be very worrying for supporters that, even now, they haven’t secured a head coach.
“Frank Lampard, for example, will certainly want to return to management, but he wouldn’t agree to the terms Sunderland is offering—such as not being able to bring in his own staff or sign the players he wants.”
“Sunderland is a fantastic football club with great support and talented young players, but they are at risk of losing these players. Although many are under contract for the next two or three years, they might leave this summer because they won’t renew their contracts until they know who the head coach will be and if they can work with them.”

One positive for Sunderland this summer is that none of their key players are out of contract, with only Chris Rigg’s scholarship deal expiring in 2025.
While the Black Cats aren’t at immediate risk of losing players for free, they could face significant issues if players start to lose interest and consider offers from elsewhere.
Both Rigg and Dan Neil have stated they won’t sign new contracts until the new manager is appointed. However, appointing a new head coach alone won’t solve the problem—the choice of manager must be right.
If someone like Dave Chanillor were announced as the new manager, fans wouldn’t expect this to persuade Rigg or Neil to sign new contracts.
If the players lack confidence in the manager and the club’s direction, they may seek to leave. Considering the team’s recent happiness and commitment, it would indicate a significant decline for the club in a short period.
