Callum Styles remained on the bench as Hungary lost 3-1 to Switzerland in their Euro 2024 opener.

Sunderland have the option to sign the 24-year-old midfielder permanently from Barnsley this summer, following his 12 Championship appearances on loan with the Black Cats during the 2023/24 season.

Styles, who has earned 22 caps for Hungary through his maternal heritage, didn’t play against Switzerland. This absence follows a recent injury he sustained during a friendly win over Israel, although he reassured fans on Instagram, saying: “Good preparation. Thankfully the injury is not serious. See you in Germany. Go Hungary.”

Hungary is now gearing up for Wednesday’s match against hosts Germany, followed by their final Group A game against Scotland on Sunday, June 23.

Meanwhile, Sunderland is still contemplating whether to exercise their option to sign Styles, who mainly played as a central midfielder for Barnsley and Hungary, but was often used as a left-back or wing-back at Sunderland.

In an interview in May’s issue of FourFourTwo, Styles discussed his club and international goals, reflecting on his time at Sunderland: “We’ve gone through two managers this season so it’s been a rocky road,” he said. “But after nine or ten matches, I started to enjoy my time and the supporters are so passionate. It’s a top club.”

Regarding his future, he added: “I haven’t really thought about it, as I’ve been focusing on playing. Sunderland has Premier League ambitions so I’d love to stay longer, but there are lots of factors that could result in different scenarios. We’ll see. I just want to play some minutes at the Euros. The main aim is to get out of the group, as that’s when the real games start to happen.”
