For £0, Sunderland are making a fortune by profiting from a jewel that is currently valued at £11 million.

Based on their most recent performance, Sunderland will be relieved that the Championship season is almost over. Last time out, the Wearside team was humiliated 5-1 by Blackburn Rovers, adding to their already extreme suffering.

Anthony Patterson, the normally dependable Black Cats goalkeeper, had a significant off-day in the devastating loss at the Stadium of Light. He made just two stops, forcing the ball to be embarrassingly plucked out of his busy net five times.

The 23-year-old Patterson is getting noticeable admirers from higher places than Sunderland, with Liverpool once sniffing around for the Black Cats number one. This bad day at the office should not stop suitors from coming back in for the player in the summer, though.

If Patterson were to be lured away from Sunderland, they would insist that the prospective suitor pay a high price to secure his services. The talented goalkeeper has increased in value since rising through the Wearside youth ranks.Based on their most recent performance, Sunderland will be relieved that the Championship season is almost over. The tenure of Anthony Patterson at Sunderland

Patterson, who broke into the senior scene during the 2021–2022 season, has amassed 118 first-team appearances for the Black Cats at the age of just 23.

The youthful goalkeeper was given the opportunity to develop during a loan stint at Notts County the previous season. He made 11 appearances and got his first-hand knowledge of the men’s game during the formative transition.

The 6 foot 2 homegrown product, who was also commended by Tony Mowbray for his “amazing temperament,” would not look back when given the opportunity to shine in the senior mix back at the Stadium of Light. He went on to become a vital member of the team over the course of the last two full seasons, totaling 86 Championship appearances.

Because of his heroics in goal for Sunderland this season, even in the face of unfavorable results (Patterson picked up two straight clean sheets prior to the team’s collapse against the Riversiders), teams that have been in the running for his services alongside Klopp’s Reds, such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest, may rekindle their interest in the near future.

The struggling second-tier team hopes to turn a healthy profit on its former Academy product, who cost the Black Cats nothing to develop and grow but may fetch a premium price if one of these Premier League clubs decides to bid on Patterson.

The transfer value of Anthony Patterson in 2024

According to Football Transfers, Patterson is valued at £11 million in 2024, making him the most valuable player at Sunderland. This value surpasses that of star player Jack Clarke of the Black Cats, who is valued at €9 million (£7.7 million) in comparison.

Due to his increased value, the Sunderland goalie is now ranked as the 16th most valuable player in the division, surpassing Daniel James of Leeds United, who is valued at just €12.8 million (£10.9 million). James is more concerned about gaining promotion than Patterson’s mid-table position.

Looking at the above table, it is clear that Sunderland is counting heavily on pricey young players like Abdoullah Ba and Adil Aouchiche to step up and save them from their terrible situation.

That mindset will not alter even if Patterson decides to leave Wearside for more opulent surroundings with steady income streams; Dodds’ team is linked to highly regarded Wigan Athletic shot-stopper Sam Tickle, who may take over as the 23-year-old’s immediate replacement.

In an effort to close the season on a positive note before discussions shift to who will be staying at the Stadium of Light into the summer, Sunderland will just try to get the best out of Patterson and Co. between now and the end of the season, avoiding transfer rumors.
