Graeme Murty, Sunderland’s under-21s manager, expects numerous clubs to pursue Ellis Taylor this summer, praising the player’s exceptional dedication.
Taylor, whose contract with Sunderland ends this summer, was informed before the season concluded that it wouldn’t be renewed. Despite this, the 21-year-old continued to excel for Sunderland’s under-21s in the Premier League 2 knockout stages, scoring a crucial equalizer against West Ham in the quarter-finals and a hat-trick against Reading in the semi-finals.
Although the young Black Cats fell 3-1 to Tottenham in the final, with Taylor captaining the team, his performance and leadership stood out.
Reflecting on Taylor after the Tottenham match, Murty said, “We’re all disappointed we couldn’t give him a trophy as he’s been exceptional. Even after learning his contract wouldn’t be renewed, he stayed committed and led the team. His performance against Reading was particularly outstanding. He’s not only a very talented player but also an excellent young man. We’ve assured him that we’re here to support him in any way he needs. I’m certain many clubs will be eager to sign him after seeing his commitment and skills, especially in the postseason.”
Taylor, who joined Sunderland at under-9s level and debuted for the first team in 2021, has also faced personal challenges, including the loss of his father last year following a tough loan spell at Hartlepool.
Murty added, “I hold him in the highest regard. Despite the hardships he’s faced this year, he remained a leader, putting the team first and maintaining professional standards. Watching him persevere and perform has been inspiring. Any club that signs him will be getting an exceptional player, and he has our full endorsement.”
