A Sunderland midfielder is drawing interest as the next season approaches.
Sunderland faces a decision regarding whether to loan out the young talent this summer in preparation for the upcoming campaign. Kelly, aged 20, has been part of the Stadium of Light setup for the past four years since joining in 2020. Although he was granted his first professional contract by Sunderland in 2022, set to expire this year, the club recently confirmed their decision to retain him, as announced in their retained list.
In the latest update concerning Kelly’s situation, journalist Nixon suggests on his Patreon platform that Halifax is interested in acquiring him for the National League. Despite finishing 7th in the previous season, Halifax lost in the playoffs to Solihull Moors, the eventual defeated finalists.
Sunderland midfielder wanted by FC Halifax Town
Before joining Sunderland, Kelly had stints in the academies of Manchester City and Salford City, along with a brief period at the Football Flick Academy. Hailing from Ireland, he showcased his talent by scoring seven goals in 34 appearances for Sunderland’s Under-18 team before progressing to the Under-21 squad. In his time with the development squad, he has demonstrated his prowess by finding the back of the net 11 times in 47 matches, while also contributing 13 assists.
Kelly has made a couple of appearances for the first-team, but his progression into the senior squad is hindered by the surplus of players in his position. Consequently, a temporary move to Halifax would be a wise decision for him, facilitating his development. Joining a team in the fifth tier, particularly one with promotion aspirations like Halifax, would provide him with valuable playing time and experience to further his growth as a player.
What next for Sunderland?
Kelly’s future at Sunderland seems contingent upon the strategies of their incoming manager. The club is still searching for a permanent successor to Michael Beale following a disappointing season. Mike Dodds filled in temporarily until the end of the campaign. With aspirations to contend for the playoffs next season, Sunderland must make a prudent choice in their next managerial appointment. Various candidates have been rumored for the position in recent speculation.
