Sunderland defender Trai Hume has earned praise from renowned Italian scout Marco Palma for his standout performances with Northern Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.

The Black Cats full-back has recently cemented his place as a key player for his national team, even captaining the side during last month’s international break. Hume’s strong form continued when he was named Player of the Match in a 0-0 draw against Belarus on Saturday.

After that match, Northern Ireland’s official social media celebrated the 22-year-old for “yet another solid display,” and Hume played a pivotal role in securing a clean sheet as his team dominated Bulgaria 5-0 on Tuesday.

Hume’s performances have caught the attention of Palma, who included him in a best XI of young players from the Nations League. Writing for the Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Palma commended Hume for his leadership and tactical awareness.

Recently, Hume has become a vital part of Northern Ireland’s defense, playing as a right-sided center-back rather than his usual position at right-back. His solid performances have helped the team concede just one goal in their last five games.

Earlier this year, Hume spoke about the possibility of captaining his country, saying: “I wouldn’t mind, as I captained youth teams growing up. I want to support younger players and lead them. It will be different now with experienced players like Steven Davis, Jonny Evans, and Craig Cathcart moving on.”

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill added: “Few players transition from the Irish League to English football with such consistency. He may not wear the captain’s armband at Sunderland, but he’s a leader. I’m confident he’ll excel in the role.”
