Clarke had been a key player at Sunderland for the past two seasons, which meant Mundle had only made six starts since joining the club in January.

With Clarke’s move to Ipswich Town, Mundle seized the opportunity to start against Burnley and quickly put Sunderland in the lead with a goal.

Mundle’s goal was reminiscent of Clarke’s style and helped secure a crucial three points for Sunderland.

He could potentially step into Clarke’s role following his move to the Premier League and has already made a strong impression on fans. His former teammate also took to Instagram to express support for him.

The 23-year-old wrote: “Exceptional ❤️”, to which Mundle replied: “❤️🎥”.

Mundle and Clarke were teammates at Tottenham Hotspur earlier in their careers before reuniting at the Stadium of Light.

Neither managed to break into the first team at Spurs, but Mundle will be hoping to emulate his former teammate’s success at Wearside.

Romaine Mundle deserves a chance in the starting line-up

The young player’s early performances have shown a lot of potential, though he has appeared quite unrefined and erratic—much like Clarke did during his loan at the club.

Clarke didn’t make much of an impact during his initial period with Sunderland, but his following two seasons were outstanding.

There’s no reason why Mundle can’t achieve similar success, and he certainly deserves the chance to make his mark in the Championship.

It will be intriguing to see how Sunderland utilizes the funds from Clarke’s departure. It seems sensible to give Mundle the opportunity to take over Clarke’s position rather than having him compete from the bench.

Though Clarke’s exit was disappointing and somewhat upsetting, the recent victory over Burnley has uplifted spirits and demonstrated that Regis Le Bris can lead the team to success without him.
