Sheffield Wednesday travels north to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland in the Championship on Sunday afternoon.
Sheffield Wednesday travel to the north east looking to maintain their perfect start to the 2024/25 season.
The Owls produced the best performance of the opening weekend as they thrashed a sorry Plymouth Argyle on home turf. Danny Rohl’s side dispatched of Wayne Rooney’s men with ease, winning 4-0.
They were successful against Championship opposition in their midweek Carabao Cup clash too.
Wednesday headed to Humberside to face Hull City, emerging 2-1 winners. All goals were scored within the first 10 minutes with debuting summer signing Charlie McNeill bagging a quickfire brace before the Tigers pulled one back through Marvin Mehlem.
It will be hoped that they can produce a similar display against Sunderland, though they’ll be looking for another win of their own after beating Cardiff City on the road on the opening day.
The good news keeps coming for Sheffield Wednesday fans with manager Rohl reporting no new injury problems when he spoke to the press ahead of this weekend’s trip to Sunderland.
There had been a slight worry over Max Lowe but Rohl, as per The Star, said they have no concerns. Ben Hamer remains out though, so Pierce Charles will likely be on the bench as James Beadle starts in goal after the two switched in the cup.
Akin Famewo and Nathaniel Chalobah are both on their way back to full fitness after missing the first two. The former has been in training and the latter is not far behind him, it seems.
It gives Rohl a big group to pick from as Sheffield Wednesday look to maintain their strong start.
Predicted XI
(4-2-3-1)
Beadle; Valery, Bernard, Iorfa, Lowe; Ingelsson, Bannan; Gassama, Windass, Musaba; Lowe.
Rohl has plenty of players to pick from but with no new problems off the back of the cup victory, it makes sense for Sheffield Wednesday to revert back to the starting XI that dispatched of Plymouth Argyle last weekend.
Beadle will return in the starting XI and with Lowe seemingly fit, he should retain his spot at left-back.
The midfield partnership seems to pick itself with Barry Bannan and Svante Ingelsson holding it down amid pretty limited options in that area. In front of them there is scope for change, with Charlie McNeill, Olaf Kobacki and Marvin Johnson sure to be among those hopeful of starting.
However, it seems likely that Jamal Lowe remains up top as Ike Ugbo works his way to full fitness. Josh Windass will be expected to start just behind him with Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama on the wings.
