Sunderland striker Nazariy Rusyn described last season as “difficult” as he struggled to adapt in his first year at the club. The Ukrainian spoke about his challenges in adjusting to a new country while dealing with injuries.

The 25-year-old explained that his first season at Sunderland was unsuccessful due to injuries and off-field issues, preventing him from starting strong and maintaining form throughout the campaign, especially since he arrived after the season had already started.

In an interview with dynamo.kiev.ua, he said: “It was a difficult season for me. I moved to a completely new country and team. Before the move, I trained minimally for about a month and a half, only in the gym, because I had groin muscle issues to heal.

“When I arrived, they were already in the seventh round, so I slowly started to acclimate to the Championship and get in shape. The language barrier also played a role – it was very important, and I didn’t know it. Football involves much more than just playing on the field.”

He added: “The first four months were very tough for me. Things improved, but then I got injured. That’s football. I don’t want to use the injury as an excuse, so I’ll just say the season was unsuccessful for me.”

When asked if he was prepared for pre-season, Rusyn said he followed a physical program during the off-season and feels ready for training: “We were given an off-season program, and I followed it. I think I’m ready for pre-season training.”

Rusyn also mentioned that he and his family have settled well in Sunderland. “I like it here, my family likes it here, so everything is fine. I think Sunderland is a good city for family life,” he continued.
