The final attempt at a new deal collapses due to Sunderland’s rejection.
The I’s northern football writer, Mark Douglas, alleges in an exclusive that West Ham has been placed on high alert following Sunderland’s unwillingness to alter their wage structure, which put an end to any prospects of Clarke agreeing to a new contract.
“The Black Cats turned down a bid from Lazio in January for Clarke, who still has two years left on his present contract, that was estimated to be worth £13 million with £3.5 million in add-ons. However, considering Sunderland’s approach to player trades, they might decide to consider bids for a player who is highly sought after by the Premier League during the off-season.
“Red alert for West Ham”
The Hammers are thrilled to hear this news. particularly in light of Lucas Paqueta’s potential summer departure.
For West Ham, Clarke checks a lot of boxes. His age of 23 and immense potential to become a premier player make him a perfect fit for technical director Tim Steidten’s recruitment strategy.
Most importantly, he is a homegrown player as well. In addition to playing centrally and across the forward line, he can also cover for Emerson Palmieri as a left wingback, an area where the Hammers lack depth.
