Following their eye-catching trip to Portugal, Sunderland may have been scouting potential recruits from the Portuguese top flight
With the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, speculation has arisen regarding Sunderland’s potential interest in bolstering their first-team squad from abroad. Following a lackluster campaign that saw their promotion hopes to the Premier League dashed, the club is in dire need of multiple improvements.
Furthermore, several players have been linked with moves away, including Chris Rigg, who has recently attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund.
As a result, this article explores three players that Sunderland’s scouts may have been observing in anticipation of the upcoming transfer window.
Róbert Boženík
Robert Bozenik, a striker often likened to Hearts’ prolific scorer Lawrence Shankland, is believed to possess the qualities necessary to evolve into a top-class striker.
The Slovakian international made the move to Boavista in 2022, initially on loan before the deal was made permanent in 2023. During his time there, the 24-year-old has experienced a blend of success, with a strong start to the season followed by a slowdown in goal production. Currently, Bozenik has amassed 11 goals and two assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
A move to Sunderland could provide Bozenik with the opportunity to enhance competition within their attacking ranks. With 37 caps for Slovakia under his belt, he brings valuable international experience. Given Sunderland’s struggles with scoring goals, Bozenik’s qualities as a target man could be particularly beneficial.
Danny Namaso
Danny Namaso, formerly known as Danny Loader, is a name that may have slipped from memory for some. Currently plying his trade for Porto, the Englishman emerged from the ranks of Reading FC.
Over the past four years in Portugal, Namaso has been honing his skills, striving to fulfill his potential. Since his arrival in 2020, the striker has progressed to the first team, tallying nine goals in 51 appearances.
Recognizing his potential, Porto secured Namaso’s services until 2028 with a new contract in January. However, the club might consider loaning him out for regular playing time. This presents an opportunity for Sunderland to potentially bring the striker back to England on a short-term deal.
With Namaso seeking consistent starts, Sunderland’s scouts could view this as a chance for the Black Cats to bolster their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Bruno Lourenço
Bruno Lourenço, an attacking winger for Boavista, has exhibited considerable potential during his two-year tenure at the club. The 26-year-old arrived at Boavista in 2022 following a successful spell at Estoril. Throughout this season, he has notched up five goals, including the opening goal against Porto over the weekend, earning widespread acclaim for his performance.
Sunderland scouts may have taken note of his standout display. While some Stadium of Light supporters prioritize a new striker, bolstering the wing positions is also deemed necessary. Lourenço could address this need, showcasing his ability to find the back of the net even against formidable opponents.
