Sunderland, Derby County, and Notts County are reportedly interested in Richardson, who is aiming to return to the EFL after an impressive stint with Gateshead. The 25-year-old, primarily a center-back, has also played as a right-back and left-back throughout his career.

Durham-born Richardson’s contract ends later this month, and he is attracting interest from clubs across all three divisions of the Football League. Championship clubs Sunderland, Derby County, and Oxford United are showing interest, according to HITC. League One sides Peterborough United and Barnsley are also monitoring his situation, while League Two’s Notts County are keen as well.

Richardson will be able to move on a free transfer due to his contract situation.

Back to Black Cats?

Sunderland fans might recognize the name Kenton Richardson. The defender came through their academy ranks and logged regular minutes for the U23s, contributing three assists in 20 games. He also made three first-team appearances during his two-year stint at the Stadium of Light.

Richardson had a brief spell with Notts County in 2021, joining on a one-month loan and playing just once for the Magpies.

His impressive performances in the National League seem poised to earn him a return to the Football League. It remains to be seen if he will reunite with Sunderland or Notts County, or if he will move to new surroundings after his exit from Gateshead.

The next destination

The jump from the National League to the Championship would be a significant leap for Richardson. Therefore, Sunderland, Derby County, and Oxford United may not be the most likely destinations for the impressive defender.

Peterborough United, known for scouting non-league talent, and Barnsley, who have a broad recruiting strategy, could be more feasible options for Richardson.

A move to League Two with Notts County might be the most natural progression. However, if opportunities at a higher level arise, the defender may aim for above the fourth tier.

Time will tell where Richardson ends up, but as he targets an EFL return, he has plenty of options to consider.
