“Sunderland might be on the verge of acquiring a significant talent if he is signed.”

The Black Cats have brought in players like Luis Hemir, Eliezer Mayenda, and Nectarios Triantis, while offloading older players to make room. However, this strategy has backfired this season, as they have lacked real leadership, leading to a dramatic drop in the Championship standings.

Sunderland will undoubtedly seek to add more experienced players to their squad this term and are being challenged to finally find a proven goalscorer to fill the void left by Ross Stewart.

Divin Mubama is a ‘serious prospect’

Despite that, Sunderland have been heavily linked with a Premier League youngster, and journalist Michael Graham believes it’s something to be excited about. Reports suggest Sunderland are frontrunners to sign West Ham striker Divin Mubama, who has rejected a new contract with the London club.

Graham wrote on X: “I don’t know if #SAFC links are legit, but Mubama is a serious prospect. We’ve seen how hard it was for young players to break into the West Ham team with Ekwah and Alese, and Mubama got a lot closer than they did. If he is signed, though, he shouldn’t be the only striker signed.”

Sunderland shouldn’t let past disappointment assume the worst of Mubama

Mubama joined West Ham’s academy in 2013 and made his senior debut in a Europa Conference League win against FCSB, where his header was deflected in by an opposing player to give them a 2-0 lead. He later scored his first goal in the same competition and was named the Mark Noble Young Hammer of the Year for the 2022-23 season. Having accumulated 13 first-team appearances, Mubama is now seeking to leave in search of regular first-team football.

Sunderland fans will be eager to avoid a repeat of last season’s situations with Hemir, Eliezer Mayenda, and Mason Burstow. However, Mubama comes with some Premier League experience, and West Ham were keen to retain him. He is evidently well-regarded and could be a valuable addition to the squad, though the need for another proven Championship striker remains.
