The Black Cats owner expressed hope that an appointment would be made ‘imminently,’ but ten days have passed with no apparent progress towards hiring a new head coach.
Despite the lack of updates on the managerial front, Sunderland made a notable move yesterday by announcing their first departure of the summer. Alex Bass has joined Notts County on a permanent deal, having made only two senior appearances since his arrival at Wearside in 2022.
Kristjaan Speakman reacts to Alex Bass exit
Speakman commented on Bass’ departure, telling the official club website: “Alex had a successful loan last season and is keen to continue playing regular football.
“After exploring multiple options for the summer – considering Alex’s future and the ongoing development of our younger goalkeepers – we concluded that this move was the best outcome for everyone. All at SAFC wish Alex the best of luck in the next stage of his career.”
Bass was signed following Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship and was one of the few underwhelming additions that summer.
The 26-year-old was intended to replace Lee Burge but never managed to establish himself in the senior team.
Sunderland set to seal first incoming
It now appears that Simon Moore will take Bass’ place – a move that is unlikely to significantly impact on-pitch performance but will likely provide mentorship to the young goalkeepers.
Speakman seems determined to push transfer business forward despite the ongoing chaos within the club.
However, fans would prefer he focuses on securing a new manager before delving into transfers.
The Black Cats will likely hesitate to bring in key players until a new manager is in place, while they also need to convince players like Jack Clarke and Chris Rigg to remain with the team in the meantime.
