Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie then claimed the Black Cats are ‘considering’ Ipswich’s offer, despite it being £10m short of their valuation.
Storey criticises Sunderland after Clarke bid
William Storey, who tried to buy Sunderland in 2020 and 2022, has now slammed the club and has claimed they will have to reject the bid if they have ‘an ounce of ambition’.
He wrote on X: “Which should be emphatically rejected by any board with an ounce of ambition. Sunderland are a vastly bigger club than Ipswich and I hope the owners act like it. Clarke is a talent who can help the push for promotion.”
Why would Sunderland sell up for less than £25m?
Storey has got on the nerves of many Sunderland fans over the past few years, as he has continued to stick his nose in the club’s business in an attempt to get supporters on his side.
It certainly hasn’t worked, however many fans will definitely agree with him here.
It was expected that if Clarke was to leave Wearside, it would be for the £25m price tag the club already placed on his head.
The 23-year-old isn’t intending on pushing through a move away and would clearly be fairly happy to stay, so accepting a bid for much lower than what he is worth seems ridiculous.
Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe is on his way to Marseille for £17m after one good season in the Championship in which he picked up 14 goal contributions.
Clarke has 24 goals and 16 assists in two seasons, so surely is already worth significantly more than Rowe.
Sunderland fans have accepted that the winger is likely to leave, but there will be a lot of angry Wearsiders around if they are to let him go for only £15m.
It is already frustrating as it is that he may join a team that could be relegated this season anyway, nevermind that they could get him for an absolute bargain price.
